8 ideas for throwing a Beauty and the Beast themed party

Beauty and the beast theme partyThe beauty of having a daughter called Belle is that when it comes to Disney princess related gifts or themes, you’re never in two minds about which to go for.

Cinderella of course!

Only kidding.

I couldn’t throw a Disney Princess birthday party for Belle and not make it Beauty and the Beast themed party now, could I? You might think that turning 13 makes you a bit old for a Beauty and the Beast party, but I say you’re never too old to feel like a princess. Ever.

It ties in rather nicely with the Sky Movies competition we’re running at the moment too, as we can either have the film running in the background, or save it for when things get a little frantic and I’m looking for an excuse to get everyone sat down quietly. (That is, five minutes after the guests arrive.) Sky also very kindly sent us a big trunk full of Beauty and the Beast themed goodies, to help us get the movie party started, with everything from a popcorn maker to princess tiaras.

So now I’ve got a ton of ideas about how to throw a Beauty and the Beast themed party!

Given the number of characters in Beauty and the Beast who are based on items of crockery, a tea party feels like the obvious theme, and luckily old floral cups and saucers are ten a penny in charity shops. To help inspire you, here are eight of my very best ideas for throwing a Beauty and the Beast themed party:

Beauty and the Beast invitations

First things first, you have to get people to come to your Beauty and the Beast themed party. No one wants to be Ross in that episode of Friends, sat alone, wearing a name tag. The invitations are your chance to get people excited about what’s to come, so don’t skimp. In this day and age, there’s no excuse for not being able to come up with a simple design yourself, and programs like Fotor and Picmonkey are great for adding text to images. If you’re not super creative, Etsy has plenty of personalised Beauty and the Beast invitations for sale. We were very grateful to Sky for including some themed invitations in our party pack, so we have that base covered.

Colour theme

When throwing a Beauty and the Beast themed party this is so important, as it is for any party of course. With a Beauty and the Beast themed party you’re looking at yellows and golds, with a smattering of princess pink for good measure, because you can’t not really can you? Keep the colour theme in mind when you’re making decorations, buying balloons and flowers and even preparing food – a strong colour theme really brings a party look together. Our Beauty and the Beast themed party pack includes plenty of colour-themed decorations, so watch out for our post-party post to see how we used these in our colour scheme.

Beauty and the Beast costumes

Most of your party goers, if they are small and female, will probably have their own wardrobe of assorted princess dresses, so don’t be too strict on the dress code – we’re not going to turn people away now just because they come as Snow White, are we? (Well, you might, I don’t know, but it would be a little cruel.) If anyone asks for costume advice or suggestions, go back to the colour scheme and recommend yellow, or how about having some guests come as ordinary Belle, in a white shirt, blue pinafore dress and white apron? To help out our guests, we’ve got a few tiaras and wands in our party pack from Sky, so everyone can get involved. (I shall be wearing a tiara of course, like the princess I am.)

Beauty and the Beast drinks

You can’t have a Beauty and the Beast themed party and not serve drinks from a teapot. If you’re feeling creative, choose cups and teapots with a good amount of white space and use Sharpies to create faces on them. Fill one teapot with juice for the children, and one with gin and tonic for the grown-ups. (Just don’t get them muddled up!)

Beauty and the Beast – the movie

As discussed, I consider a bit of planned quiet time an essential part of any kids’ party. The great thing about throwing a Disney Princess theme is that you can turn it into a proper movie party, and make the film a proper focus. Get a copy on DVD if you don’t have Sky Movies and encourage singing as much as possible. Perhaps you could have an impromptu karaoke competition?

Milk and cookies

It’s nice and easy to create a Beauty and the Beast themed party food simply by cutting sandwiches into pretty shapes like stars, hearts, flowers, and crowns. We are using a tea party theme here don’t forget, and what tea party would be complete without biscuits? Children might not be so keen on the actual tea element, so how about milk with your cookies instead?

Tea cup cakes and jellies

You’ve got the teapot, now you need teacups. Teacups lend themselves quite nicely to all manner of party activities and aren’t just for serving drinks. (They can’t run the disco or anything, but they’re pretty versatile.) Try using them to set individual jellies, topped with a scoop of ice cream, or use them to serve cupcakes and finish them off with swirls of yellow or pink frosting.

Beauty and the Beast party bags

This is the rubbish bit really isn’t it? Waiting in line for your party bag while your mum gets your coat and thanks the host is fun, but then you get home and it’s a pack of crayons and a few fruit salad sweets and it’s all a bit of an anti-climax. Instead, why not spend the money on just one gift per child, like a dark pink, silk rose, just like the one Belle carries? You can also splash out on a couple of good quality party game prizes, to add value for guests. Our party pack has some lovely Beauty and the Beast toys in it, so we’ll be having an ace pass the parcel.

Belle’s birthday is while we’re away on our holidays, so we’re going to have a late party towards the end of August. Come back in a month to find out how we got on!

And that’s it! My top tips for planning your very own Beauty and the Beast themed movie party! Do you have any ideas to add?

Oh why did I have to have stinky boys? Is it wrong to have a Beauty and the Beast party for myself do you think…?! I’m a little bit in love with your tea cup as well!

You could definitely have one for yourself! Or get some friends round and fill ALL of the teapots with gin?

Do a beast theme for the boys. Use mugs instead of teacups and let them play defend the castle in the garden. All the running around will tire them so they’ll be willing to sit to decorate cookies or brownies or make beast masks.

What will be a good favor for little boys? I have beauty and the beast pendants and chains for the girls but my daughter’s class also has 4 boys (4 and 5 years old) Thank you.

Hmmm… Is there anything associated with Chip maybe? He’s a cheeky little boy character isn’t he? Perhaps even just get a regular toy they might like, but attach a little label saying ‘Chip’s favourite XXX (whatever it is…)’ Perhaps I’m clutching at straws a bit! Or how about something linked to Belle’s Dad being an inventor?
