Best Places for a Weekend Family Getaway

Wondering what to do for an upcoming family vacation? Here are a few ideas for planning a weekend getaway that will get everyone excited.

Big Bend National Park

Give your family a weekend experience they’ll never forget by planning a fun getaway to Big Bend National Park, located across the Rio Grande from Mexico. Your family will get to hike some amazing trails that offer breathtaking views of the mountains as well as the Rio Grande. Along the way you’ll be able to relax near the hot springs or sit near the water in a blissful moment of silence. The park is also open to campers so feel free to bring a tent or sleep under the stars.

Palo Duro Canyon

The Grand Canyon isn’t the only canyon in the United States. Palo Duro Canyon is actually the second largest canyon in the country and it’s located just 25 miles south of Amarillo. It drops nearly 800 feet into the ground and provides stunning views that can only be found in a few places like this.

Galveston Island

If you’re staying in or near Houston then hop in the car and drive down to Galveston Island, located less than an hour from downtown Houston. Even in the fall the weather is generally nice, which means you can spend the weekend with your feet in the sand instead of raking leaves or doing yardwork. Spend the afternoon in the water and walk Pleasure Pier at night to browse some cool little shops. End your night with one of the many restaurants nearby before heading back to the pier for a little more fun, where you’ll find all kinds of rides and games for the whole family to enjoy.

Spend enough time on the island and you may think about relocating to the region. The area has a lot to offer residents and you can learn more by searching houses for rent in Houston TX to find a place that is right for your budget and lifestyle.

South Padre Island

There’s no need to leave the country for a tropical vacation. Simply head to South Padre Island and you’ll be able to hang out on beautiful white beaches and swim in crystal clear waters. South Padre Island is located near the southernmost part of Texas. Visitors have the opportunity to schedule a guided horseback tour of the beach or get on a boat to watch the dolphins nearby. If you’re looking for some thrills, then you can always try jet-skiing, parasailing, or surfing too.

Fredericksburg

Nobody said that a family getaway had to include children. If you’re looking for a fun activity with some of your adult family members, then take a trip to Fredericksburg, which is basically the Napa Valley of Texas. You’ll find plenty of wineries to tour, featuring tasting rooms, delicious appetizers, and sometimes live music to really set the mood.

Fredericksburg is also a historic town so there’s much more to do besides wine tasting. The town dates back to 1846, so if you want to learn more about the town’s history then head to Pioneer Museum.
