Win £100 to spend on Christmas at Tesco

I love Christmas.

There. I said it.

I’m not ashamed to be one of the people who gets excited hearing Slade played in shops in November. It makes me happy.

It’s not the actual day so much, which tends to be a bit of an anti-climax, dominated by that slightly over-full-probably-shouldn’t-have-had-bucksfizz-for-breakfast feeling, it’s the build up I love. And the longer the better in my opinion. The smell of a Christmas tree in the morning, choosing presents, eating mince pies and brandy butter for breakfast. It’s all good.

To try and get even the scroogiest of readers into the Christmas spirit, I’m giving you the chance to win £100 to spend on presents in the Tesco Christmas Gift Guide. One hundred whole quid. That’s not too shoddy is it?

To get your name into the lucky Santa hat, all you have to do is sign up to receive my blog posts by email if you don’t already, (at the top of the left sidebar), and leave a comment on this post telling me your favourite thing about Christmas. It’s not compulsory, but if you’d like to also share this post via twitter, facebook, your own blog, carrier pigeon etc, that would be smashing, and very in keeping with it being the season of goodwill to all men.

The competition will close at the end of November, and a winner will be announced as soon after that as I remember to do it.

If you’d like even more chances to win stuff, and who doesn’t, Tesco have told me they’ll be giving away gift vouchers on twitter, so following them would probably be a good idea – www.twitter.com/tescomagazine

Happy Christmas!

My favourite thing about Christmas is my daughter. She was born 8 days before Christmas day in 2009 and I spent that year cuddled up on the sofa snuggling and sniffing my newborn while all around me were sparkly lights, happy people opening lovely presents and tasty food, we even got snow outside! It was perfect and the memories are beautiful :)

  5. 14 November, 2011 / 4:53 pm

My favourite thing about Christmas is the time off with all the family and the TV specials. I agree that the build up is the best thing though.

    Hiya ,
    What a lovely competition!
I already subscribe to your blog :)

I know it sounds corny but my absolute favourite thing about Christmas is seeing the joy on my little girl’s face when she opens her presents on christmas morning.
I’ll have two little ladies this year as it’s my newborn daughter’s first christmas too!!
    How exciting!

My favourite thing about Christmas is that at the age of 30, it’s still new to me.
Yes, dear Slummy Single Mummy readers, December 25, 2011, will be my SECOND Christmas.
And because of that, I appear to be carrying the excitement you expect to see in a two-year-old. The wrapping paper, the glittery balls and the general anticipation of the whole period is slowly making me giddy with glee.
Yes, I won’t have many family members around me, and yes I’m expecting more Tippex than Rolex, but it doesn’t matter.
For me, the novelty of Christmas hasn’t worn off because it’s still so fresh.
So that is what I love about it, it makes me feel like a child again.

    Already a subscriber, obv.

And my favourite thing about Christmas is Boxing Day. Way more fun than the actual day as there’s no pressure, it’s all about playing with the new things, trying on the new clothes, the final push at watching everything you’ve highlighted in The Radio Times and rather than having your hand smacked for trying to eat all of the food you’re told you must eat more. Brill.

My favourite thing about Christmas is the warm fuzzy feeling that comes with being wrapped up warm and hearing Christmas sons (like you, love hearing them in November…the sooner the better, I think!). This year, my favourite thing will be having our 6 month baby experience Christmas and setting up our own traditions that I hope will continue long into the future!

My favourite thing about Christmas is seeing everyone else’s faces when they open the presents I give them. I don’t know when this changed and it became about other people’s presents rather than my own but changed it has and I guess that means I’m a grown up! Looking forward to having a very grown up Christmas watching my daughter and family open up my presents most of which will be hand made thuis year as we are having a ‘Walton’s Christmas!’

There’s so much I like about Christmas – for me it is not the day but a whole season. I suppose the best bit (for me) is finding that perfect present – something you like, something he will love AND within budget.

Favourite food is stollen (recipe, my blog). Tesco do a fabulous Finest Stollen last year : all marzipan and flaked almonds, glace cherries… Don’t you go buying them all up though- I have to wait til january to better afford them !

Coincidentally I have a Christmassy blog post today too…

I am a bit like you I think and like the build up. Choosing what I think my children will enjoy, the food, the prep and this year thinking what sort of cakes to bake for the school fair :). The day itself is good but always feels a bit rushed these days. The children rip in to their presents where as I always like to be a bit more sedate and savour things. It is like a whirlwind and I don’t know who to watch for the best lol.

I have followed you for months now and love getting my regular emails of your blog. You make me smile :) (hope that didn’t sound as creepy to you as it did to me lol )

Well bah humbug! What do I like about Christmas …. Errr …. Was going to say the food but all that is available the rest of the time …. Errr …. James Bond films; again also available the rest of the time ….

Oh I know NUTS, chestnuts that is. I love ’em, roasted chestnuts are the dog’s danglies, they are up there in my “top 10 favourite foods of all time” along with stuff like lobster (and liver bizarrely as most people I know seem to despise it). PLUS you can’t buy them all year round (not easily anyway).

So there ya go, I like nuts for Christmas, and I don’t like socks ….

And before anyone says I’m a miserable old scrote, my family is scattered far, wide and thin. There are no young children in the family and in my new job I’m probably gonna be working :p

Christmas is about family and children really, and if you haven’t much of and/or any then Christmas just seems much like “any other day” in my opinion.

What a lot of comments :)
I also love the build up to Christmas..! When you first see the Coca-Cola advert: ah, just magical! I love the lights and heating on in the house when it’s cold outside and I loooove wrapping up warm in winter clothes! I love the time off work with my lovely family. I also love walking down the road in the week before – everyone just seems so jolly and people actually smile at each other! And all this because of one day in the bleak mid-winter (wait, that’s a line from a song. I’ve gone too far!).
I love the idea of it all; friends and family over for mulled wine, my 4 year old will be so excited about Father Christmas coming this year!!! I also love the fact that, even in my early 30s, it still gives me the same buzz of excitement that I had when I was a child!
Ok – now you’ve got me thinking about it! Happy :) xxx

  44. 14 November, 2011 / 10:17 pm

I love the feeling that you get at Christmas that reminds you how lucky you are to have a great family and that not everyone is so lucky. My tear jerker is always hearing Silent Night, been known to cry when I’ve heard the Salvation army playing in the street. It reminds me of my Great Grandad and when I was a wee girl. He used to have a Christmas angel that you wound up and played Silent Night. You have to cherish your memories. Christmas is extra special now as I became a Grandma this year so we have a special little boy to make some magical Christmas memories with :)

  45. 14 November, 2011 / 10:36 pm

What I love about Christmas is tgat I still get as excited as I did 20 years ago! I cannot wait to get the tree up and decorated, getting the boys involved and making new decorations.
We don’t have a colour theme, the paper is always a mix of colours and the tree is covered in coloured lights :)
I live sitting in our living room in the dark surf the tree lights twinkling and snuggling up on the sofa

Where to start! Love the festive spirit, picking gifts for the family, cheesy songs, chocolate without guilt every morning for 1 whole month, tree, lights (national grid probably don’t appreciate just how many bulbs are glowing on our house every evening), best of all the kids faces on Christmas morning! I love to spend unspoilt family time, indulging in everything we don’t usually get to eat and do!!!!

I love the build up, trying to get the best deals early, matching 3 for 2 offers, getting every type of cream Tesco sell, using clubcard points for tins of sweets and mince pies, lining the kitchen draws with fancy paper, looking at the hrs of work put into putting up the Christmas tree and wondering ‘would it have looked better over the other side of the room?’ and the sitting down to watch a Christmas film with a mince pie (with a selection of creams!!)

  62. 15 November, 2011 / 11:22 am

Usually I’m not a fan of Christmas, as previous years have never been particularly great. But as a new mum, I’m SO looking forward to Christmas this year! My little man will be 10 months old, and I can’t wait to see the magic in his eyes when we come down the stairs, see piles of presents, a gorgeous tree, lots of homemade decorations and seeing whether or not Father Christmas and the Reindeer ate the snacks we will have left out. :D So exciting!

My daughter, 8, still believes in Santa too. It’s great fun helping her put a snack out for him on Christmas Eve, then watching her face light up in the morning when she sees her presents — that is, if she manages to get any sleep overnight :)

Buying the christmas tree is the best bit, its when the excitement starts building and the house suddenly feels festive

  90. 17 November, 2011 / 2:51 pm

Yay, Christmas! I can’t pick one thing I love about this most festive time of year; I love everything about it. A condition of entering the competition, you say? Oh, ok then, if I’m pushed, the thing I love best is the comraderie of it all: talking about how you’re going to spend the holidays, moaning about how far behind you are on your Christmas shopping, the endless discussions about whether it’s going to snow. Christmas happens to everyone, and so everyone talks about it, even if it is to have a whinge. That’s what I love. Now… show me the money! :)

My favourite thing about christmas is the feeling that everything is going to be alright because you’re close to your loved ones and there’s always a light in the darkness.

I love how my mum cooks all the things I like with so much love, while my dad enjoys his cup of fresh wine looking at us with so much joy in his eyes.

My favourite thing about christmas so far this year is the new John Lewis ad, which I think is gorgeous and tugs hard at the heart strings. As a grown up I am pretty cynical about most things, including hard sell commercial ads, but deep down we are all little boys wanting to give our mum a present, aren’t we?

    And it is beatifully made……

My favourite part of Christmas is Christmas eve, were lucky our little whirlwind is still excited about Father Christmas and there’s something a little bit more special about getting the meats ready, wrapping last minute gifts and altogether the whole atmosphere. For me it even outshines Christmas day.
And also I believe in father Christmas by Greg lake, when i hear that its christmas for me.

Decorating the tree, drinking warm hot chocolate with marshmallows, listening to Christmas music on my Ipod, touring the town to look at light displays, shopping for Christmas presents, finally getting to open the presents Christmas morning, baking sugar cookies with my mom, celebrating the birth of Jesus, dressing up for church on Christmas Eve, choosing a poor childs name off of the church Christmas tree and getting them a Christmas present, seeing little kids at the mall talking to Santa, watching snow fall gently to the ground, going to my town’s annual Christmas festival where we get to ice skate and take sleigh rides, eating so many kinds of delicious food, and spending precious time with my family.

    Im following your blog!

My favourite thing about Christmas is the atmospheric build-up, the snow (if we get it!) decorating the tree together and making a night of it as a family with nibbles and mulled wine or hot cider, Christmas carollers and going ice skating or just wrapping up for a winter walk with the family and of course the opportunity to spend time off work with loved ones at home in the warm!

  106. 18 November, 2011 / 9:02 am

I love Christmas too! I don’t know what it is about it that I still find magical all these years later! I love the Christmas films, we’ve receorded some already and I have even made a start on my Christmas shopping, a huge no-no for me usually as I am the last minute sort of person. I’m looking forward to some time off work and for a nice time to relax with the family. With as little stress as possible this year, please! :o) xx

for years, the best thing about christmas was the tingling of excitement in my tummy on CHristmas eve, it felt so magical, my mum always tried so hard to capture the feeling and that feeling has never left me. Even through divorce, ill health, breakdown and loss, the feeling I still get on CHristmas eve has never left me. My two eldest children are now 21 and 17, they still tell me how even at their age, they get the same tingle on Christmas eve. I am now looking forward to doing it all again as I have a lovely 8 month old baby girl with my gorgeous man, I can’t wait to make magical for her too. I can’t wait to see her face when all the fairy lights are lit, the fire is glowing and the tinsel and glitter will be sparkling softly. It’s not about the presents, it’s about the time we spend together, those special moments you can’t recreate. They aren’t babies and children for long so I intend to relish every second of it. And I am so grateful for them. Merry Christmas for when it comes, big love and starlight kisses,
    Joy.

My favourite thing about Christmas is family. We are really struggling so the kids don’t get the big things like their friends but they do get lots of games and time, which is far more important. I always make the tree look great (we bought it before everything went wrong and is 7ft!!!) and everyone pitches in with preparing the Dinner and clearing up after. I just LOVE Christmas!

The best thing about Christmas, you mean apart from the presents? ;p

I love Christmas. I know people nowadays like to complain about what a pain it is but I still love it, even at 22! The best thing about is definitely the excitement and the build up to the big day.
And so what if it’s much more commercial these days? I LOVE buying presents for my family. I love the Christmas adverts on TV (particularly the ‘Holidays are coming’ Coca Cola truck and Toys R us) and I love listening to Christmas songs on the radio. Last Christmas by Wham is my favourite – always reminds me of being a kid in the 90’s!
As long as I get to see my family on Christmas Day then I’m happy.

What I have loved most about Christmas as a kid is all the smells and sights beforehand… Baking biscuits with my mum, decorating the house, and then Christmas Eve itself (being German, we celebrated on Christmas Eve). Not even so much the presents either, but a really nice dinner with everybody first, then a walk with everybody, with luck through the snow etc. etc.!

This is our second Christmas with our beautiful daughter who will be 14 months old on Christmas day, we’re looking forward to seeing her reaction when we put the tree up and then trying to keep the Christmas tree upright and intact from her inquisitve little fingers, stopping the cats climbing the tree as our angelic little girl screeches at them in excitement whenever they cross her path, managing to keep any presents wrapped up under the tree until Christmas morning, and taking photos of her in front of the tree which has since been re-decorated to cover only half the tree as our daughter practices her new found skill of throwing….though we wouldn’t have it any other way and it certainly wouldnt be Christmas without her.

Last year was the first Christmas that my Daughter really got excited (she was nearly 5), I remember as her and I walked downstairs and the look on her face when she saw gifts underneath the tree. She said out loud ‘Look Mummy, Father Christmas has come.’ She physically shook with excitement.

The pleasure I got from her and I in that room and her asking if she could open each gift was the best gift I have ever had.

    May that magic never end.

My favourite thing is watching people open presents, I get more excited than they do, it doesn’t really matter what is inside, it’s the opening that counts. Because of this I have a habit of giving people loads and loads of really pointless gifts all wrapped up, like a tin of beans or some pan scrubs.

The thing i love the most is that feeling when you go to bed on Chirstmas eve knowing tomorrow is going to be a magical day for the kids.
