Keeping yourself healthy means looking at the whole picture, from your mental health to your physical health and everything in between. But it can be difficult to even think about your physical health. Or if you do you might automatically jump to ‘working out.’ But that’s not all there is to it.
So here are 5 tips to improve health.
Get Active
The first of our 5 ways to improve physical health is activity. You don’t have to have an extensive workout routine in order to be healthy, but you do need to get active. You need to be up and moving around, walking, playing, getting fresh air, climbing stairs, and other similar activities. Having fun with your friends, kids, and grandkids can help you get the activity you need, without even realizing you’re doing it.
Of course, if you’re really looking to improve your physical health you can get into an exercise routine as well. 150 minutes a week of moderate intensity aerobic activities and a little bit of strength training can do wonders for your cardiovascular system and more. That can help when it comes to getting insurance for over 70s or any age, because you’ll be in better physical shape.
Get Plenty of Sleep
This is one that a lot of people skip out on. You might be giving up sleep because you have a child at home that needs you. Or maybe you’re spending that time doing work or something you enjoy. But getting at least seven hours of sleep a night is extremely important for your overall health because it lets your body reset, recharge, and heal from the day.
The best way to do this is all at once. At night. In your bed. So try to turn off the electronics or put down the book or whatever else it is that you do late at night and get to bed. Seven hours or more is the best way to go, but too much sleep can be a downer as well. So aim for seven to nine and then adjust as your body tells you what it needs.
Cut Down on Stress
Now we’ll move on to one of 5 ways to improve your health that can be a little more difficult. Cutting down stress.
Notice we didn’t say to cut out stress, because that’s practically impossible. But cutting down stress is crucial. Stress puts a whole lot of wear on your body and can lead to burnout, health problems, depression, and a whole lot more. Incorporating some type of relaxing activity or activity that resets you and helps you feel ready to take on whatever comes next.
Eat a Balanced Diet
You don’t need to eat healthy 100% of the time. In fact, that’s highly unlikely for most of us. So, strive for balance. Eat healthy more than you don’t. Incorporate fruits and vegetables and protein into your diet.
Try to cut back on sugary drinks and treats, processed foods, and excessive amounts of salt. These things are not healthy for you and can cause a lot of strain on your body. Even if you’re not gaining weight or you think you’re only gaining a small amount, too much sugar is bad for your teeth and your complexion. Too much salt is bad for your heart, your blood pressure, and your blood vessels.
Drink Plenty of Water
One of the most important things you can do for your body is to drink water. And lots of it. And that’s why this is an important one on our list of 5 ways to improve your physical health. You need water throughout the day and while the prevailing wisdom about just how much water seems to fluctuate, the best thing is to keep drinking throughout the day.
Drink whenever you’re thirsty. Drink when you’re eating. Drink when you’re outside for extensive amounts of time, when it’s hot, when you’re working out, and just whenever you think about it. Water is necessary for your body to function properly, so make sure you’re getting enough of it.
Bonus: Listen to Your Body
Let’s toss a bonus one in here too. Listen to your body.
Not every body is the same. They are going to need different things at different times. Maybe your body needs a day of rest. Maybe you need more water. Maybe you need to eat healthier one day than the next.
Whatever your body is telling you, listen to it. That’s going to help you create a plan and a process that works best for you, specifically. And remember that your body’s needs will likely change from one day to the next. That’s okay, and that’s perfectly normal. Just keep listening.
