Eat a cream tea to help save a child’s life? Why would you not?? It’s certainly a lot more fun than running a marathon or shaving your head. Today’s charity is a very important one, so please do have a read and help if you can.
What’s the problem?
Research is the key to saving many children from a lifetime of suffering, yet surprisingly, medical research into conditions that devastate children’s lives is poorly funded in the UK. Action Medical Research has a critical job to do in helping fill this gap to protect children.
How does Action Medical Research try to solve it?
Action Medical Research was founded in 1952 by Duncan Guthrie to find a cure for polio, a condition that affected the lives of many thousands of children including his own daughter, Janet. Early research funded by the charity helped to develop the first oral polio vaccine which eradicated new cases of the disease in the UK.
Since then we’ve spent more than £100m on research which has affected virtually every single person in the UK, including:
• Discovering the importance of taking folic acid before and during pregnancy to prevent spina bifida
• Developing the use of ultrasound technology in pregnancy
• Testing the early rubella vaccine
Can you explain how you make a difference?
We fund a wide range of research which covers many different conditions affecting babies, children and young people. We’re currently funding more than 75 studies at leading hospitals, universities and specialist centres across the UK around stillbirth, epilepsy, meningitis, cerebral palsy and brain cancer, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children.
What can I do right now to help?
Ordering one of Action Medical Research’s cream teas in a box will help the charity’s work to save and change the lives of babies and children. After the sweet success of our first delivery in June, which saw thousands of cream teas delivered to homes, schools and workplaces around the country, we have launched a second delivery in August.
This summer we want people across the country to take a break and enjoy a cuppa with the help of our delicious British cream teas in a box – which contain scones, Tiptree strawberry jam, Rodda’s Cornish clotted cream and three strawberry crème chocolates, as well as the more traditional Yorkshire Tea, knife and serviette – all for £6.
All you have to do is order at action.org.uk/cream-teas by Thursday, 30 July, and your cream tea will be delivered to your door on Friday, 7 August. The minimum order is for 10 boxes, so why not get together with friends or colleagues to share a delicious treat and raise funds for sick babies and children?
Follow Action Medical Research on Twitter and Facebook to hear more about their work helping to save children’s lives.
Oh wow what a fun and interesting way to bring together family and friends as well as raise money for a really amazing charity – thanks so much for sharing
