I entered a competition this week with Photoworld. It wasn’t so much the cool prizes that attracted me, as the excuse to have a little sit down and look through my photo albums. The competition has a different theme every week – this week it’s ‘friends’, next week is ‘travel’ and the week of October 6th is ‘celebration’.
I had a look through the albums and picked out a picture for every theme, to help get you in the mood.
We moved about quite a lot when I was younger, so my oldest friends only date back to when I was about 14 years old. I have a close family, so I have them for my pre-teenage memories, but I’ve always thought it must be nice to have friends that you’ve known since you were really small.
In the spirit of living through your children, I’ve made sure that Belle has friends like this. It was hard to do for Bee, as I was so young that I didn’t really have friends with children, but when Belle was about four weeks old I went along to a breastfeeding group and introduced her to some other babies.
This is Belle, right, with her friend Ella, left. I love the look on Ella’s face, it’s a sort of mix of admiration – Belle is a few weeks older after all – and mild envy. Ella looks like she thinks Belle definitely has the best toy.
We now live in Ella’s old house and Belle is still friends with Ella and her younger sister Josie. In fact, Ella is the one in the glasses in Belle’s Vertbaudet video last week.
Initially I looked at my pictures from Ethiopia for this one, and while I did have some amazing pictures from this trip, it didn’t feel like it summed up travel for me. Sure, it’s the most interesting place I’ve ever been in terms of stunning landscapes and different ways of living, but it’s not what travel is really about for my little family.
Most of our holidays have been in the UK, staying in caravans or yurts, going on day trips to strange museums in people’s sheds and having lunch in little cafes. My travel memories are of Belle sat in a highchair eating an egg sandwich the size of her face and Bee getting stung on the bottom by a wasp that was hiding in her trousers. My favourite travel memories are summed up by pictures like this:
When Ethiopia is long forgotten we will always remember the crazy car park baby.
This was a funny one for me. When I looked through our photos we didn’t really have many pictures from actual occasions like birthdays – I think we must always be too busy trying to be first to the cheese and pineapple on sticks. This picture stood out for me though:
It’s a picture of Bee when she was four years old and a bridesmaid at her Dad’s wedding. She was absolutely adorable and although you can’t really see them in the picture, she also had fairy wings. The picture itself is a bit battered around the edges as it has travelled about with me a fair bit. Whenever I’ve had jobs in real offices, (unlike nowadays when most of my work gets done in bed), it was always the picture I stuck up somewhere on my desk.
