So here I am, about to move house again. This will be the fourth house I have lived in just in the lifetime of my blog and I’m heading for thirty in my lifetime as a whole. While I’m an old hand then when it comes to packing, this is quite probably the hardest move I have ever made and represents a significant crossroads in my life. I feel like the last two months have all happened outside of my control without me really meaning them to, and that things could so easily be so different.

(I do know that this isn’t actually how things happened, it just feels like it right now.)

Belle and I love to eat out. It’s not that I am lazy, dislike cooking and like any excuse for an outing… oh, hang on a minute, that’s exactly what it is. Sorry.

Still, I can make believe it’s about new experiences, the social aspect of eating and all that jazz. Last week then, we took a trip out to Aspects Park on the outskirts of Bristol to try out the new menu at The Wishing Well. We had never been before, so were interested to see what they had to offer.

We were given a very friendly welcome, seated at a nice table by the window and settled down to inspect the menu.

The Wishing Well isn’t pretending to be anything fancy pants, so we weren’t looking for Michelin star food, we were looking for choice, good service and value for money – simple pub food at it’s best. We weren’t disappointed on the value front as they have loads of offers on during the week and a good range of ‘buy one get one free’ options on main courses too. We thought the idea of ‘toddler tapas’ was very cute and at only £1.50 for three small items would be perfect for tiny tummies. View Post

Today I have a guest post. It’s from a male friend of mine who prefers to remain anonymous but I was really thrilled when he offered to write it for me, partly because I love his writing but also because I thought it would be interesting to get a man’s perspective of dating. I may not be throwing myself back on the market any soon but it’s still all useful research.

He did suggest that I might like to split it into two posts but honestly it’s so easy to read that I thought you would prefer it all in one go. Enjoy!

Dating for men

After planning our ‘big day’ investing time, care and – yes – money into an endeavour that now seems faintly ludicrous; I found myself spat out of the other end of the relationship sausage machine; shrink wrapped with a ‘Divorced…’ red sticker slapped across my cellophane. View Post

As a family, teeth are not really our strong point. Wit, intelligence and modesty yes, strong, straight teeth, not so much. More of my teeth have fillings than not and on my last trip to the dentist he asked if I had ever considered work do ‘balance them out a little bit’.

I am definitely never going to crack America with my teeth. I might crack a tooth, but that’s about it. I sometimes try to blame it on my genes, like overweight people often do whilst eating a chocolate digestive (me again), but I do just like sweets.

You can buy all sorts of clever products and apps now to help encourage children to enjoy brushing their teeth, but Belle has never really bought into the whole ‘teeth cleaning is cool!’ school of thought. In fact, she hates it.

“Have you brushed your teeth?” I will often say as she is on her way to bed.

“I think so,” she will say, looking decidedly shifty. This is her idea of not lying.

“Really?” I will say, eyebrows raised.

“I can’t remember,” she will say, and then, realising I’m not buying it, “I might have forgotten.”

Hmmm.

If you struggle getting your children to keep their teeth clean then you definitely need to take a look at this infographic from Toothpick. Toothpick is a cool new business that lets you search for dentists, read reviews, compare prices and book instantly online. As someone who has done the whole ringing round dentist after dentist trying to find one that will take us, I can vouch for what a great idea this is. They have loads of fun information and resources on their blog too, which is where this infographic comes from.

I learnt all sorts of things from this – did you know for instance that you should have x-rays at age 7 to check for decay between teeth? Or that children who breathe through their mouths are more likely to have crooked teeth? (You can put a humidifier in their bedrooms to try and help.)

When you hear the word ‘diet’, how do you feel?

Dieting makes me think ultimately of sacrifice. I am a typical Taurus in that I like the comforts of home – open fires, comfy sofas, tasty food and cuddles – and to embark on a diet to me can feel like having to give up a hugely important part of my well-being. It’s silly really as I know it doesn’t have to be like that and that in fact, eating well rather than just eating anything within reach, has got to make you feel better long term.

Still, it’s hard to give up something you love, even if you know it’s good for you long term. I’m a very short term person and wanting to put a biscuit in my mouth right now usually wins out.

Dieting doesn’t have to be all about tasteless, high fibre crackers though; if you do it carefully you can eat delicious treats without the guilt. That was my Weight Watchers challenge this week – to surprise myself at how flexible and tasty a diet can be. If you want to join the challenge this week you could win a Crock-Pot brushed steel slow cooker. I have a feeling that this post may be a little superfluous. I there anyone who doesn’t love Cornwall?

We hadn’t visited Cornwall for a while though, so Belle and I were really looking forward to heading off to Retallack Resort and Spa for a couple of days last weekend. Belle loves a good lodge. We just stayed for two nights, but it was a well-timed break and a great reminder of just how lovely Cornwall is.

Here then, in case you were in any doubt, are four reasons to love Cornwall. View Post

“Would you be interested in having a team of professional cleaners from Fantastic Services come and spring clean your house in return for a review of the service?”

Um, let me think about that for a NANO SECOND.

“Yes please.”

As you know, Boyfriend recently moved out, and this left me with two very good reasons for needing a spring clean. Firstly it has meant that I am having to move house – North Bristol is pretty pricey for single mums who play on the internet for a living – plus I need to be closer to friends and family so they can help with Belle when I decide I want to go to London for the day to play on the internet there instead. Secondly, Boyfriend did all the cleaning that involved getting your hands wet, as I don’t like that.

Understandably then, standards in water related areas have slipped a little over the last few weeks. (I will add, in my defence, that I was also letting them slip, knowing the cleaners were coming, so try not to be too disgusted.)

Ah, the joys of single life. It’s all about going out and getting drunk and forgetting your problems right?

Um, wrong.

Not when you’re a single parent anyway, because who, now you’re single, is going to babysit for you? My new single life has so far mainly involved working at home during the day and hanging out with Belle at home in the evenings. Now this is fine, but when the ‘home’ is somewhere that you’ve only ever lived with your partner, it’s trickier.

Everywhere I look, literally everywhere, is a reminder of Boyfriend. It’s kind of annoying.

‘Ah, here we are in the kitchen, where he used to stand in that corner leaning against the counter and I would hug him!’ Or ‘The sofa! We used to sit there together to watch Wheeler Dealers and eat sweets!’ Or even ‘Look! The rack where he used to keep his shoes!’

It gets a bit pathetic sounding after a while. (By a while I mean about three seconds. Not that I say these things out loud, but still.)

In situations like this some sort of positive action is definitely required and so I was very happy to accept Tesco’s offer of some goodies from their new Couture range to give my bedroom a little bit of a makeover. At least then when I get into bed I will not be able to make any sort of feeble emotional connection with my duvet cover.

How do you feel about meal planning? Do you have a weekly schedule or do you fly by the seat of your pants when it comes to mealtimes?

I read a lovely book at the weekend called The Rosie Project. The protagonist, Professor Don Tillman, who describes himself as ‘wired differently’, uses a ‘Standardised Meal System’ to plan, shop and cook for his meals. Basically this means he has exactly the same weirdly elaborate meal on the same day every week, believing that once you’ve perfected the art of preparing a lobster it’s much easier to just do it every Tuesday rather than waste time learning new skills. It also means he has less waste as he only buys the things he knows he is going to need. He then keeps each day’s ingredients on their own specially labelled shelf.

It was interesting to read about, as my Weight Watchers #StepIntoSummer challenge this week has been to plan every meal in advance. I don’t have to repeat the plan every week for the rest of my life, but the principle is the same – plan in advance and you make shopping simpler, cut waste, avoid over-eating and do away with that sense of dread as five o’clock approaches, you know that small people are going to start asking ‘what’s for tea?’ and you’ve not even checked the freezer for emergency fish fingers.

That’s the theory. In practice of course things aren’t that straightforward.

Weight Watchers #StepIntoSummer

As much as I hate having to come up with ideas every afternoon, I also feel squeamish about the idea of meal planning. Before Boyfriend left this was definitely his thing – he could go to the supermarket and come back with Actual Foods that could be used to create meals; when I go I end up with a selection of tropical fruits, some nice looking jam, and a couple of bottles of tonic water. His shopping skills are sorely missed.

This week then has been the hardest challenge for me to date. I just don’t like the idea of planning meals – how can I possibly know what I’m going to feel like eating on Sunday a week beforehand? What if Colin Firth shows up and invites me out for a spontaneous dinner? Should I turn him down because I have all the ingredients for a prawn stir-fry for one in the fridge? And yes I know Colin isn’t actually going to show up – he hasn’t got round to asking me for my phone number even yet – but you get my point.

Still, a challenge is a challenge. I chose to interpret it fairly loosely, and rather than saying ‘I’m going to eat this on Tuesday and that on Wednesday’, I instead shopped for a certain number of meals and allowed myself  flexibility over which days to eat them. I don’t know if this is in the rules, but it felt far less scary. I also knew I was going to be away at the weekend, so ‘planned’ to eat at a particular restaurant on the Saturday night. Do you think this counts?

I found perusing* recipe books and magazines for ideas helped to inspire me a little, and if I was going to do it long term it would definitely be an excellent excuse for a new whiteboard. One of my favourite dinners from the week was home-made burgers with potato wedges. These were super easy to make, Belle loved them and they are the kind of thing you could always prepare in advance too if you wanted too. The full recipe is at the bottom of this post.

RECIPE: BBQ burgers and chunky wedges

Weight Watchers #StepIntoSummer

Serves 4 (14 PP)

For the burger:
500g extra lean steak mince
1 small red onion, grated or very finely chopped
1 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp ground cumin
1 1/2 tsp ground coriander
1 garlic clove, crushed
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Lettuce leaves, to serve
4 Sandwich Thins, toasted, to serve

For the chunky wedges:
4 large potatoes, unpeeled, each cut into 8 wedges
1 tsp mixed dried herbs
Calorie controlled cooking spray

For the tomato salsa
2 large tomatoes, roughly chopped
2 spring onions, finely chopped
1/2 hot green chilli, deseeded and finely chopped
2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander
1/2 lime, juice only

If using a bbq, start by lighting it in order that the coals will be hot enough to cook on – usually about 15-20 minutes. (You can also fry with a few sprays of cooking spray, or grill.)

In a large bowl, mix together the mince, onion, oregano, ground cumin and coriander, garlic and plenty of seasoning. Divide the mixture into 4 and form into balls. Now flatten the balls, and make them square-ish and about the same size or slightly larger than the sandwich thins. Set aside.

For the chunky wedges, preheat the oven to 200C. Put the potatoes and dried herbs into a large bowl. Season well and spray with calorie controlled cooking spray. Toss everything together until evenly coated. Spread the wedges onto a non-stick baking tray and bake for 30-40 minutes, turning once or twice, until golden.

Meanwhile, for the tomato salsa, mix together the tomatoes, spring onions, chilli, coriander and lime juice to taste. Season and set aside until needed.

To cook the burgers, put on the bbq directly over the coals, and cook for 4-5 minutes each side, until the juices run clear. Toast the sandwich thins over the coals during the final couple of minutes’ cooking time.

Serve the burgers on the sandwich thins, with lettuce, tomato salsa and mustard, accompanied by potato wedges.

I’ve stayed in a lot of hotels over the past couple of years. Initially it’s exciting, spending the night somewhere different, snaffling the free toiletries and watching TV in bed, but after a while it can become a bit boring – there are really only so many white bedrooms and smiley yet blank receptionists that you want in your life.

Our stay at the Bella Vista in Weston-Super-Mare then was the perfect antidote, just what we needed to balance out all the sterile chain hotels we’ve endured. We were checking them out on behalf of Approved Family Friendly, and so had our best hotel inspector hats on, but really found it difficult to fault them.

We were welcomed by owners Bev and Tim, who took on the Bella Vista two years ago, and it became immediately obvious that the couple have a genuine love of children and a desire to give families a wonderful holiday experience. The Bella Vista is a classic seaside town hotel, but with a personal touch and friendly welcome that you just don’t find in many places.

Bella Vista hotel Weston-Super-Mare Bev and Tim acknowledge that the accommodation is a little dated in parts, but the Bella Vista is a work in progress, with the eight bedrooms in the process of being brought up to date. We stayed in a comfortable family room with one double bed and one single, and had the chance to check out some of the other rooms too. The rooms that have been redecorated have been very tastefully done and there is plenty of space for families, with some rooms sleeping up to five people.

Bella Vista hotel Weston-Super-Mare

What’s lovely about the Bella Vista is that families really do come first – if you can think of anything at all that you need, Bev and Tim will do everything they can to provide it. Belle had an absolutely lovely time and when we left was already talking about wanting to go back again, and thinking about the home made presents she could take with her to add to the seaside themed décor.

If you’re looking for a comfortable, affordable family friendly hotel then the Bella Vista really should be top of your list.

My very first smartphone was a Blackberry Curve. One of these cute little things, remember them?

I’ve never been very on top of the latest phone technology, so until I got this one, I think in 2009/10, I just had a phone that sent text messages and made calls – very retro. Being able to reply to emails FROM MY PHONE was a massive thing and the start of a flourishing if not slightly unhealthy obsession with being able to respond Very Quickly Indeed to everything. Just in case. View Post
