TYLKO REVIEW: My amazing new customised shelves from Tylko

Looking for flexible shelving? Read my Tylko review!

I want to introduce you to what may well be my very favourite thing in my new house – my shelves from Tylko:

Well hello there!

Let’s start at the beginning though. How exactly did I create this masterpiece of shelving?? Easy peasy actually. I’ll show you.

First up, you have to go to the Tylko website, then click under the ‘shelves’ menu to find the kind of shelving you need. They have split it into categories to help get you started, like bookshelves and sideboards, but essentially they all do the same thing as everything is totally customisable.

Pop in the dimensions of your space, then play around to get the design you want:

As you can see, you can change pretty much everything – the design, the colour, individual shelf dimensions – you can even choose to add doors and drawers to some of your shelves if you want to. The ‘density’ scale is fun. Slide it up and down and it changes the spacing of your shelves so you can design something totally personal to you.

Tylko even has an augmented reality app, to help you see the shelves in situ, which is pretty clever.

Once you’re happy, before checkout you can see how long it will take to produce the shelf you have designed – the time depends on the colour and features you have chosen. Be warned, if you have decent sized shelves like mine, the boxes WILL be heavy.

Timings wise it worked out really well, as I was able to go in and put them together at the new place while it was still empty. You put your Tylko shelving together face down on its front, ready to tip back against the wall, so you do need to consider this when you’re designing them to make sure you have enough floor space to assemble them.

The Tylko shelving construction is very cool.

Rather than having to unpack packets of screws and spend hours toiling over your flat pack, Tylko shelves come with built in colour-coded connectors that just slot together. I say ‘just slot’ – I did need a hammer to encourage some of them into place, but even so, compared to other furniture I’ve put together over the years, these were an absolute breeze. Once I’d unpacked everything, it took me 45 minutes from start to finish. Not even kidding.

They were heavy to tip up into place, but Bee and I managed it between us. Here they are, alone in the room, ready for decorating:

Then you get the REALLY cool bit, where you get to fill your new Tylko shelves with all of your favourite things.

For me this includes my collection of vintage James Bond books and teen detective novels and jugs in the shape of chickens where the milk comes out of their mouths. (So it looks like the chicken is throwing up milk into your coffee.)

I also have two wooden penguins with name tags around their necks. You wouldn’t think that Belle and Josephine would be the most common names in the world but I kid ye not, we went into a National Trust shop at Dunster Castle about six years ago and these penguins were SAT NEXT TO EACH OTHER.

If that’s not a sign then I don’t know what is.

Of course I’d have been a fool to miss the opportunity to arrange some books into rainbow colours too. I did this once with my entire book collection, at a time when numbers were at their peak, and it was very satisfying, although slightly annoying that a lot of books come in black or white.

The lovely thing with these shelves though is that I get to just pick out a few favourites to display, so I only have to include the nice colours.

So that’s my shelves.

I absolutely LOVE them and look forward to spending many a happy Sunday afternoon reorganising them and rearranging things.

These are possibly the most beautiful shelves I’ve ever seen. I have a real thing for plywood at the moment too. But I really like the seemingly random pattern of the shelves. Love how you’ve styled them too.

I can’t recommend them enough Jen, they were so simple! I’m looking around the house now trying to spot other spaces I can get them for :-)

What a great idea, it can be so hard to find furniture to fit the space and requirements. I like that these are slightly quirky and not all uniform too.

I’m loving these shelves from Tylko. We’re about to move into our new home and think I might need to look more into something like this for an awkward space we have.

I just went to have a look at yours and I LOVE them! I really like what you’ve done having one of each side like that and all your stuff is so grown up and lovely looking :-)

These look great. How did you attach to the wall to prevent them tipping over?

They come with fixings – a couple of L shaped brackets that you screw into the top of the shelves and then into the wall.
