8 books to read when you want to escape from real life

escapist books

Which, let’s face it, is a lot of the time.

These eight books aren’t self-help books or anything like that, they are just really lovely books, with amazing illustrations and photographs, or unusual stories. They are books that you can escape into, even if it’s just for ten minutes and you still have to clean the bathroom when you come out again.

I’ve chosen each of these because I think they are the perfect books to dip into when you need a bit of cheering up. With this in mind, I’ve taken a picture of a page inside each, to give you an idea of what you might find. Each title is a clickable link though, in case you want to find out more or see the front cover.

(Although you know you should never judge a book by its cover right?)

Growing up, my parents had a whole series of Photography books, and I would spend hours pouring over the images again and again.

Now, I love reading fiction (and even have my own book blog, http://www.dickensdoesbooks.com) – but still find myself captivated by photography books :)

Horror is one of my favourite genres I like a good scare if its written well. Stephen King is what started me out on this genre, I like the kind of horror novel that causes you not to sleep on the night that you’ve finished reading it. A lot of King’s novels have this powerful quality to them. It sets this genre apart from others in a way. However, I am up for all kinds of fiction really. I appreciate well-written works of fiction.

    7 March, 2017 / 9:55 pm

To truly escape and get my brain to switch off, it has to be fiction for me. I need to escape into another world, completely different to my own, perhaps a magical one like in Princess Bride, Stardust or Northern Lights, or I escape into a different time and place thanks to Jane Austen or Toni Morrison. But the best escape is to snuggle up and read old Enid Blyton or Shirley Hughes books with my kids!

Books have always been my escape from worries, heartache or even just a boring day. I love both photographic books (of travel and animals) and crime thrillers especially ones that have a series of books to let you become really acquainted with the characters e.g. Val McDairmind with Tony Hill (Wire in the blood etc), James Patterson with Alex Cross & Karin Slaughter with Will Trent.
I’m loving that my baby seems to be enjoying books already and even though we’ve already started building her library up, I’d love to win to purchase her more and let her see that their is no greater tool than imagination and learning from the wonderful world of books. :)
