New Year hibernation with DFS

This post about my new DFS sofa contains three of my favourite things:

  • Winter
  • Cosiness
  • Sitting down

I’m not going to be one of those people, and call it Hygge just because I put a blanket over my knees, (I ranted about this), but I will say that I do like a cosy winter’s evening at home on the sofa.

What’s not to love really? Christmas is all done, spring is on its way, and in the meantime you have an excuse to put your pyjamas on at 4pm every day. Snuggle up with a cocoa, light some candles and crack out the Fresh Prince back catalogue. (Sooo excited that this is now on Comedy Central.)

My snuggling has been severely impaired until now by the fact that our biggest sofa was also the least cosy sofa in the whole world. It had no arms, no squishiness – what on earth is the point of a sofa with no arms? You may as well just sit on the floor and lean against the wall. That’s not very cosy is it? That’s like being 13 and on a school camp in an old mansion house and hanging out on the floor in the corridor because you think you’re cool.

No more corridor floor chic for me though.

I’ve got a new sofa from DFS – the Zinc 2 seater sofa, designed by French Connection. You see how comfy yet stylish I look?

DFS Zinc sofa review

DFS Zinc sofa review

I love the mid-century vibe it’s got going on – simple lines, wooden legs and button back – but primarily we bought it based on comfiness.

Belle and I went to our local DFS store one Tuesday evening at about 7pm to test them out, because we’re rock and roll like that. We sat down on all of the sofas we liked the look of, (fabric sofas only as I don’t like the whole sweaty thigh thing you get with leather sofas), had a little bounce up and down, squeezed the cushions and generally made ourselves at home. This is very important when it comes to sofa buying. You can’t just buy something online as there is often an indirectly proportional relationship between how cosy a sofa looks and how comfy it actually is – you have to have a real life lounge about on it.

(You can go ahead and order the Zinc sofa online if you want to as I can vouch for it’s squishiness.)

Squishiness aside, I really like the sofa’s fabric. It comes in lots of different colours and a couple of fabric types, but the one I’ve chosen has a lovely tweedy feel to it. It looks and feels much more expensive than it is, which is always a good thing if you’re on a budget.

The sofa comes with two cushions – the blue and white ones – and then I’ve added my own contrasting cushions for a bit of extra pizazz. (And to match the phone – yellow is my favourite colour.)

DFS Zinc sofa review

The DFS Zinc sofa fits beautifully into our living room and is just the right size for me to sit on with my feet up. Everyone else has to sit on the floor and lean against the wall obviously if I do that, but for during the day when I am ‘working from home’, or quiet evenings when Belle is practising make up looks in her bedroom, it’s perfect for a casual spot of reclining.

See? I fit just nicely.

Everyone else best get comfy on the floor.

We were sent the Zinc 2 seater sofa by DFS for the purposes of this post. All opinions are my own. Side tables and magazine rack from Dwell, telephone from Red Candy, mustard cushions from Arlo & Jacob and black and white cushion from Happy + Co.

Yep, they do a 3 AND a 4 seater version! Go go go!

I’d love a little sofa for my bedroom, super squishy! It has become harder to find comfy, affordable furniture, and those that have it and are smart have been reupholstering instead of springing for new, so no second hand in my family or friends to re purpose for our use. I finally found (and after 13 weeks it came) a large sectional, but obviously too big for a little spot in a room that already has a bed. Sadly, I don’t think your version is available to us in the US.

Jo you look very cosy. Makes me think I might need a second settee as my leather one has not got the squishyness factor yet (I think it may take a few more years to get that lived in look). Guess where I shall be heading this weekend if I can persuade the other half? Or possibly will go on my own!!

That’s so weird, because ours genuinely don’t do that at all! I wonder if they have had feedback and changed the design?? Ours is our main sofa, and we sit on it all the time.

Ours also slip off all the time. I might look to buy some non-slip matting to put under the sofa cushions.
It is really annoying and the side arms also seem to slide off too.

Finally someone with the same problem. I’m so disappointed to be honest, when I first saw these sofas I felt in love, bought the 2 and 4 seats, for our living room, now I’m so upset because of the cushions sliding off all the time, every day before going upstairs I need to put them back, what a disappointment. Tried everything, bought some mats to put underneath, nothing works. And it seems the 4 seats is worse than the other one. :(( If you ever find a solution please share it with me. Also I have notice that these sofas (I have the fabric ones) are like a lint magnet, another big disappointment. I’m so upset not finding these reviews before.

Hi Laura – my cats scratch it a lot too, and sharpen their claws on the arms, but honestly, it doesn’t show at all, I’ve been really impressed! (Especially when you compare it to an armchair I got on ebay recently that they ripped to shreds in minutes…) I can send you some pictures of the arms and back if you like? No – I’ve only ever done quick sponge jobs on them when we’ve dropped bits of chocolate or things like that. The fabric doesn’t show marks or wear very much at all, so I haven’t felt like they needed anything so far.

Yeah the comments are a bit of a mixed bag aren’t they?? All I can say is that I’ve had over two years now and never had any problems with it, none of the issues with the cushions and it has worn really well, even with three cats scratching it!

Hi there, what did you decide in the end? We loved this couch when we saw it (corner version), and the measurements are perfect for our room, but now after reading all the negative reviews, we are revisiting our decision to buy it this week. It’s such a beautiful piece but the cushions constantly sliding off would annoy the heck out of us.

      • Madalina
        8 January, 2020 / 1:56 pm

We sold ours, but no matter how stupid it sounds, we took the risk and we bought the same collection but the leather ones. And honestly, I don’t know if DFS took in consideration the problem with the cushions sliding off and sorted it out the issue or maybe the leather ones didn’t have this problem at all, but I can say that the leather ones don’t slide off! Which is a relief! So maybe that helps with the decisions! Good luck! X

That’s a good question! Honestly, I don’t know, as I’ve never done it. When we’ve spilt things or left marks I’ve just sponged it. Probably best to check with DFS as I wouldn’t want to advise the wrong thing!

      • David
        18 August, 2019 / 2:14 am

DFS don’t recommend it, as it’ll affect the fire retardant nature of the fabric.

  16. Ric
    11 September, 2019 / 1:04 am

We’ve had the three seater Zinc that matches the one in this post for around 4 years. It has also survived cat scratching attacks, and having had a toddler spill numerous drinks and wipe his nose on it etc without too much damage, so I would say that its best feature is that it is hard wearing fabric.

Style-wise it also looks classy, but those are the only two good points for us.

We also have a constant problem with the cushions sliding forward every time we use it. It is very frustrating and makes the sofa look really scruffy, unless you tidy it after each use. This has been an issue since the first year of owning it.

The problem is down to the depth of the seat cushions. I wish i’d spent more time sitting back on it when trying it out in the showroom. The seat cushion is deeper than most people’s upper legs, so for anyone under 6ft to sit back against the rear cushion, the angle required of your back makes you slouch and push the seat cushion forwards with your bum. I’m 5’11 and this happens for me without fail. The only way i can actually sit upright without slouching is to sit with my legs crossed!

The other big issue that I have with this sofa is the fabric dye has faded really badly in sunlight. The rear and top of the rear cushions/ top of side arms are often in sunshine as the sofa is positioned in a bay window. It began to fade after 1.5 years, and in places (particularly the top of back) is now closer to white than the original teal!

We certainly wouldn’t buy another one, and I’m kind of looking forward to being rid of it. But alas, we will have to wait until our children are old enough that we dare buy a new sofa without it getting trashed. Next time comfort will be prioritised over style.

We haven’t washed the covers on this sofa, but if you do here’s a top tip: Put them back on the cushions while still slightly damp so you can stretch them on and remove the creases.

Thanks so much for your comment Ric! I wonder if DFS made some changes to the design at some point, because the cushion slipping thing really seems to split people and I can honestly say mine don’t do it, and I’m only 5’5″! I’ve just been to have a look at the fading issue, as mine has been sat right in a window for over two years now since we moved house – you can see a line if you pull the back cushions forward, where it’s faded a little on the top half, but I wouldn’t say it’s any more than I would expect, especially as the window is south facing. I can only conclude that they must have had a lot of feedback on these issues and made changes? It’s really interesting to hear your experiences and definitely a good tip to test thoroughly in the showroom.

Thank you so much for posting this, I’ve just got home from seeing it in a dfs store and was all set to order it. Bit the points you’ve made are what would really wind me up, the deep nature of the seats causing slouching and fading in the sun as ours would be going in the new extension. Really appreciate your detailed feedback!

I’ve been considering this Collection for a while. I tried it out at a showroom 6 months ago and it was definitely very comfy to sit on. I think the showrooms have the memory foam cushions which probably make a massive difference to the comfort aspect. I bought the EDD sofa in the end as it was smaller than the zinc. It was for my garden room. I’m now thinking of buying the zinc cuddler chair in blush luxe velvet for my living room to go with my grey sofa. I have a cat so I’m hoping it will stand up to scratches on the velvet. Will sadly have to wait until this lockdown is over before ordering one though Your sofa looks very stylish and comfy Jo, hope you are keeping safe and well. xx

I got this last year in green velvet after sitting on it in DFS it was so comfy and soft. I love the look of it but find my cushions so hard they’ve never got soft. I have a cat and thankfully she’s never scratched it. Don’t like that the cushion covers don’t come off the long ones that sit at the side of each arm, been considering getting a new couch cause of how uncomfortable it is but looks like I’m the only one who thinks it

have you had any issues with the sofa looking a bit saggy and worn, some 2nd hand ones i’ve seen look a bit tatty. we bought a sofa from dfs back in 2010 a “hand made italin leather corner sofa” and it didnt even last a year before the seats were falling out and going flat and the frame was breaking, we had the insurance but they fobbed us off blaming us saying things like that we must have sat on the foot rest playing an x box……we didn’t even have a games console or anything, they just made up crap to get out of replacing it. so I am just really weary of getting another dfs sofa, the sofa we have no we got 2nd hand off ebay to replace the dfs crap fest and its now 14 years old (has a date stamp under the cushions), the covers come off it can be washed and it still looks rather new if you ignore s couple of cat scratches. its just a bit too small now for our needs and I really like this sofa but in the corner version and I’m really worried about paying out and ending up in the same situation again.

Hi All. I’m really interested in getting the zinc sofa but reading some of the comments regarding the slipping cushions has made me wary. Some people mention that it was possibly redesigned to fix this issue but is that actually confirmed? Has anybody bought one of these in the last 12 months and what are your impressions?

      Hi Sarah,

Mine is actually a few years old now and my cushions never slip. I haven’t heard anything official but my sense from the comments in this post is that there have been fewer concerns over the cushions lately than there were originally. (Not terribly helpful but that’s my sense!)

Sarah, I have followed this page for a while now, and I have seen a comment here few months ago, suggesting that she got the sofa for free for advertisement purposes. That comment is gone, and that made me think twice when reading her comments praising the sofa. So you should think about that too. Everyone, absolutely everyone had problems with it, only the owner of this site had no problems at all. Strange. I really hope you will approve my comment, last one didn’t make it.

Hi. I deleted that one comment because it was rude and aggressive. I’ve never hidden the fact that I was gifted the sofa – it has always been clear in the post – and if I wanted to only have comments praising the sofa then I wouldn’t keep all of the comments made about the cushions that are here. I’m happy to have people share their experiences of the sofa, good and bad, but I’m not happy to have someone just insult me.

My mum has the 2 seater in velvet and it’s perfect, no sliding cushions. It’s a bit firmer than the one she sat on in store but I think velvet has less stretch in it. She opted for the memory contour foam filling in the seat cushions. I’m now going to buy one for my home. I was wanting the weave fabric but am worried my cat will get his claws into that so will opt for the regular fabric like Sarah has as that seems to have faired well with her cats. I’m wondering if you opted for the contour filling Sarah or are your seat cushions just standard?

Hi Madalina. Thank you for your reply. I am still considering the sofa and I am hoping to go and try it out at DFS now that we are finally coming out of lockdown. I agree that I need a balanced review so all the comments are really helpful. :)

      Hi Sarah,
We have 2 2seater zinc sofas in the light grey and have had them for about 4 weeks and have no issue with the cushions slipping. We also opted to upgrade to the memory foam as we like a firmer seat and so far so good. We are very happy with them so far and they are much more comfortable than they look. So glad we went for them as like you i was concerned on reading about the cushions maybe slipping.

Hi Michelle. Thank you for replying. I am looking at the same colour! I aim to go to DFS at some point soon, sit on the sofa and try to make the cushions slip from under me to see how hard this is. Jo the author of this page says that she suspects the design has been changed to address this issue so fingers crossed. :)

Hi has anyone bought the leather zinc versions of the sofa? I bought the leather zinc corner sofa and after two years it’s gotten very saggy and tatty looking. The leather which was supposed to be of high grade/quality is also wearing really badly. Insurance company is trying to fob me off about wear and tear but I’ve no pets or children so it’s not getting much abuse.

Hi there, we fell in love with the Zinc in night blue leather. The fact it’s still in the window of DFS in 2023 is a good sign but not sure about leather after reading some reviews.

Hi! We’ve ordered the 4 seater but just had an email to check it fits for delivery…unless the arms come off it probably won’t! Do you know if the arms come off? Thanks

Hi there, I have the 4 seater and have had the same problems over the past 5 years. I had it professionally fixed once but it has happened again. I am not overweight. I’m really upset. I think they are still under warrenty so will see if I can get fixed… Again.

Hi. We have just bought tte green version of the zinc sofa and we are disappointed that it’s so stiff in comparison to the one we sat in in the dfs store. The seat cushions we expect red to be firm but the fabric is so hard especially the back cushions and little side cushions. The top edge of the back cushions is not smooth like the one in the shop it’s wrinkled and because there is no give in the fabric I can’t smooth it out. Disappointed
