The ‘What I See’ project

What do you see when you look in the mirror? What I see varies a lot. Sometimes I look in the mirror and see a big wobbly heffalump. Other days I feel more positive.

When I went to record a clip for the What I See project I was in a particularly positive mood, as you can see from my video here. It was because I was in London – going to London always makes me feel all excited and full of potential. Plus it wasn’t that long after I got my funky new glasses and I was feeling pretty awesome, like one of those modern social media types. If I was a man I would definitely have a curly moustache.

The What I See Project is a global online platform that recognises and amplifies women’s voices. Through each person’s unique and honest answer to the universal question, “What do you see when you look in the mirror?”, women from all over the world can be empowered by relating to each other’s words.

The project aims to provide a safe environment where women can share their struggles, achievements and inner thoughts, and express themselves freely through a website that appreciates them for who they really are. Throughout a year, The What I See Project aims to reach out to as many women as possible, from as diverse a range of locations and walks of life as possible.

Here’s a video that explains it a bit more. (Their answers are much more thoughtful and profound than mine obviously.)

This isn’t meant to be something that you passively watch though – the What I See project wants to hear your story too.

Get involved by submitting your thoughts on what you see when you look in the mirror and you could win the chance to attend their amazing event at the Science Museum.

One year from 40 & I’m the most comfortable I’ve ever been with myself, but still the thought of making a statement like this is terrifying!

Would be amazing if someone could do a similar long term project with a group of girls at age 15, then the same girls, same questions at ages 18, 25, 30, 35, 40 & onwards to see how much our opinion of ourselves changes, dependant on the lives they’ve lived.

Have you ever heard Amanda Palmer’s song ‘In my mind’? If I could get away with posting a link to the video instead of making a personal post I would as it sums up how I feel & have felt over the last 5 years.
Definitely worth a listen to for the over 35 women out there. No matter what anyone’s personal opinion on Ms Palmer is in general (me, I think she’s incredible & have been a fan for 10 years), there’s something about that song that hit a nerve to begin with (at a very low point & couldn’t stop crying for 1st 5 listens) & then became something that has stuck with me as a ‘secret smile’ moment when another bump in the road happens.

I don’t think I have heard it – I will check it out. That’s a fantastic idea though to video everyone at different ages – maybe I will suggest to the What I See project that they try to go back and ask the same people five or ten years from now!
