Today I have a guest post from Bee, about her favourite Christmas traditions.

Christmas presents

All of my 20 Christmases so far have comprised of the same basic elements that I rely on to officially make it Christmas every year. Things generally happen in about the same way every time and I like the way things are. This year, however, I am going for my first Christmas in Ireland. I’m going for four days, which I am currently trying to manage in my mind as I really don’t like being away from London, let alone being abroad. Hopefully Christmas will still be nice though, even if I have to get my head around not having the usual Christmas traditions to look forward to. View Post

I am not known as being a terribly sentimental parent.

I don’t keep piles and piles of frankly poor quality toddler paintings, I am easily distracted and I don’t even remember the minute my children took their first steps. That I blame on my memory though – it’s not like I have actively tried to forget or anything.

You’d think then that Mother’s Day might not be terribly high on my agenda, but actually I quite like it, if only because children seem to enjoy it and of course it’s always nice to legitimately lie in bed reading a magazine rather than washing up. Belle gets very excited about occasions where she gets to wrap something up from her bedroom and present it to me as a gift. I sometimes think she likes my birthday more than hers.

(Belle will probably tell me off for mentioning her ‘wrapping up things from her room’ habit, but actually it is adorable, and if I didn’t get a bedroom gift I would be quite sad. I can picture her now, 37 years old, presenting me with a used lip balm.)

Gifts are tricky for Mother’s Day – flowers and chocolates feel a bit lame, but you don’t want to go too thoughtful and set the bar too high for subsequent years. One compromise could be a One4all gift card. You might think that nothing says ‘I forgot it was Mother’s Day until this morning in Tesco’ like a gift card, but these are different because you can personalise them, proving that you thought about it in advance.

I was sent a One4all gift card to buy myself some Mother’s Day treats and mine was personalised with one of my favourite ever pictures of Belle – the one where she is a baby and eating a sandwich as big as her head.

One4all gift card

You can spend them in loads of different places, from House of Fraser to Pizza Express, so your mum can treat herself to some new clothes, make-up, a meal out or whatever else she fancies. As we were off on holiday last week, I took mine the week before up to my local shopping centre and picked out some holiday related treats. Is was incredibly easy to use; you just hand it over at the till and the balance gets deducted.

Shopping purely for myself got me thinking about all of the little things I like about Mother’s Day. What’s your best bit? Here are five of mine:

1. Breakfast in bed

Mother’s Day breakfast in bed isn’t about the quality of the food, it’s all about the presentation. Forget smoked haddock and poached eggs, nothing beats a bowl of milk, with lumps of cheese and herbs floating in it, presented by a small, chubby, beaming face.

2. Magazines

I love reading, but there is something about reading a magazine that somehow feels much more decadent. I went to WHSmiths with my One4all gift card and picked up a couple of favourites. I’m not a fan of Cosmo style magazines, where you are left feeling like a poverty stricken heffalump because you can’t afford a £249 belt and don’t look like a famine victim, but I do like magazines that make me think about myself or inspire me to try new things.

3. Pampering

Whereabouts on your list of things to do does ‘pamper self’ come? Probably not number one. I’m guessing it’s somewhere below ‘hang out washing’, ‘make packed lunch’ and ‘deal with the thing at the back of the fridge that’s been there for three weeks now’. It’s important though to take some time out for you – you have to love yourself first right? After WHSmiths then we popped over to Boots with our One4all card and Belle helped me choose a new nail varnish.

4. Actual little things

Nail varnish chosen, we then worked our way through our holiday shopping list, spending quite a lot of money on miniature toiletries. This might seem like an odd thing to treat yourself with but this was one of my best bits for two reasons – firstly, did I mention that these toiletries are miniature? And who doesn’t like tiny versions of things?? They are adorable. Secondly, it’s easy. We spend so much of our lives as mums trying to save money and organise everyone that once in a while it’s nice just to say ‘sod it, I can’t be bothered decanting shampoo into small bottles that I’ve used dozens of times before, I want adorable custom made miniatures. Let’s make my life easy for once dammit.’

5. The cards

I’ve saved this until last because this really is the best bit isn’t it?

I said that I wasn’t sentimental, but I do have two old suitcases under the bed filled with bits and pieces and now and again I get as far as sticking them into my one special scrapbook. I don’t have every single love note my kids have ever written me but I have enough to remind me that regardless of how many magazines I read or what colour I paint my nails, Mother’s Day is about being a Mother.

Why not slip a One4all gift card into your Mother’s Day card this year and show your mum how much you love her?

It’s here! My Win Christmas competition is here at last! Crack open the sloe gin and cherry liqueur chocolates and feast your festive eyes on the amazing array of prizes I have lined up for you.

Win Christmas

I really am very excited about this competition as I am a massive fan of Christmas. With a view to spreading the Christmas love I have been very busy over the last month getting dozens of companies on board and gathering prizes in what I now like to call ‘the Christmas room’. (Sorry Bee. It will be all gone by the time you come home for Christmas I promise.) It has been a wonderful way to get into the Christmas spirit without having to actually spend any money. Sure I don’t get to keep any of the prizes, but that’s OK, I’m just thrilled to be able to offer such a fab collection of goodies. View Post

I have a little quiz for you. Picture the scene for a minute if you will…

It’s Boxing Day. You’ve eaten 439 Elizabeth Shaw mints, drunk 14 glasses of sherry, and are collapsed on the sofa. Your Christmas presents are sat in a pile at your feet. Do you think to yourself:

A. What a lovely collection of thoughtful yet practical gifts!

B. What a bunch of crap. Why do my family hate me so?

C. It’s lovely that everyone has bought me a present, but I do wish I just had that camera I really wanted instead of these 27 Boots gift sets.

Let’s find out what your answers mean: View Post

Christmas to me is about people.

I know there will be some of you groaning and complaining about all the relatives you have to visit and how you wish you could just stay home on your own and eat an entire turkey while you watch Back to the Future, but I simply can’t be Scrooge like about Christmas.

Christmas for us has always been about spending time with friends and family. Even if you don’t like your family, (which luckily I do), how would Christmas be different to any other day if you didn’t make the effort to get together? It’s the more the merrier for me, and I will go out of my way to see friends and wangle party invitations – any excuse for a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie. I also LOVE buying presents, and have already spent more at Rex London than is probably acceptable given that it’s still September, but I don’t care. Boo to you all. View Post

This afternoon I have spent about two hours wrapping Christmas presents. I don’t dislike it, but if you’ve got lots of presents to wrap, it can get a little bit boring. So how do you make wrapping presents more fun, at the same time as making your gifts look beautiful and thoughtful?

Here are my favourite five Christmas wrapping tips*

Eat a biscuit and have a nice cup of tea
Having a snack and a warm drink to hand makes the whole thing a lot more fun. This afternoon I went for a tin of Fabulously Fox’s. If you’re wrapping in the evening, sherry is an acceptable alternative. (The evening officially starts at about 4pm in the winter. Fact.)

Have all your equipment to hand before you start
This year I have bought one of those cool tape dispensers that you wear on your hand. The refills cost a small fortune but it’s worth it. No more tapey teeth for me.

If in doubt, buy more ribbons
This is my motto. I have a whole box full of Christmas ribbons. I very rarely actually use them, but they are lovely to look at, and make me feel like a present wrapping professional.

"Christmas ribbons"

Personalise your gift wrap
Everyone knows that getting the kids to potato print holly leaves onto brown paper is the wholesome way to do it, but if you don’t really like crafts (like me) then buying some personalised gift wrap is the way to go.

Christmas present roulette
If you really want to make things more interesting, don’t write tags. Muddle all the presents up under the tree and just let your friends and family take pot luck.

Happy Christmas!

*These tips apply equally well to birthdays. I am nothing if not versatile.

FIVE MORE SLEEPS!!

Can you believe it? Only five more sleeps until Father Christmas comes!

It is very exciting.

I get so excited about Christmas, that I’ve actually bought most of my presents by the beginning of December, but just in case you’re not quite as thrilled by the prospect of Christmas shopping as me, (I’m looking mainly at the men in the audience here), I’ve got some ideas for things that your wife/girlfriend will definitely want for Christmas.

Gin
I wouldn’t be Slummy single mummy if I didn’t suggest a nice bottle of gin would I? Go for something really glam looking and make sure you wrap it up nicely – no copping out with a wine bag or anything. Girls love a bit of fancy wrapping. This pink gin from Harvey Nichols is rather beautiful:

"pink gin"

“Eccentric, irreverent and innovative” apparently. The gin’s not bad either.

Underwear
Every woman likes to made to feel special at Christmas, so you can’t go wrong with some lovely underwear. Think sexy and glam without the porn star edge. A wonderbra from figleaves.com would be perfect. Hello boys…

Chocolate
It feels unoriginal, but what girl doesn’t love chocolate? Seriously, there isn’t anyone. Pink gin, a great cleavage, a box of liqueur chocolates – surely that’s anyone’s recipe for a very merry Christmas?

"Liqueur chocolates"

I have actually bought myself a box of these very chocolates and given them to Belle to wrap up for me. That’s totally fine isn’t it?

An iron
You just can’t go wrong with a decent iron. A good steam function, an easy grip handle, an iron is surely what every woman wants for Christmas?

WRONG.

Never, I repeat never, buy your wife or girlfriend an iron as a gift. Unless you want it in your face. The same applies to aprons, oven cleaner, hoovers and pegs. Just no.

So ladies, what would your dream Christmas gift be?

I love Christmas. The mulled wine, mince pies, crappy music, but especially buying presents. Shopping online for Christmas presents is extra fun, as you can eat a mince pie, drink mulled wine and listen to crappy music at the same time, all from the comfort of your sofa.

One of the problems I have though is that I keep seeing things I want to buy for me. Like that lovely blue velvet chair. This is especially true of my new favourite gift website, Zinc & Co Zinc & Co have collected together the most unusual and beautiful gifts they can find, and have added in an extra special promise – if you can find the same products cheaper somewhere else they will refund the difference. Now that’s a pretty big claim, and saves you a lot of faffing about and worrying about whether you’re paying over the odds.

Also, they offer next day delivery, so if anyone is still looking for a last minute Christmas gift for me, these are my four favourite things:

Sparrow keyring and holder

Have your keys looked after by a bird! Not only that, it doubles as a whistle, just in case you are ever holding your keys and need to call a dog or something.

"Sparrow keyring"

Storm in a teacup

Well this is just adorable isn’t it? Who doesn’t like tea? It says it’s the perfect mug for a drama queen.

"Storm in a teacup"

Desk bunny scissors

Is it a bunny? Is it a pair of scissors? Who cares, it will look cute on your desk."desk bunny scissors"

Vintage posters

They have loads of these and they are all beautiful. ‘O My Love, tonight the sky is a darkened circus tent above our dreams and the moon slowly walks a tightrope into morning.’

"O my love poster"

They also do wishlists, so you can choose your own favourite products without having to go to the effort of setting up a blog. Nice. Choose your favourite pressies now at Zinc & Co.

Friends and family say I’m hard to buy presents for, but how can that be true? I’m always seeing things I want to buy for myself.

Take this reindeer for instance, which I spotted earlier this week in Liberty. I’d be very happy with one of these for Christmas. (You can’t see the price tag very well, but I think it was about £1,299. It was very soft though).

"Liberty reindeer"

Tasty little things to eat and drink are always nice too. I wouldn’t be disappointed if someone bought me this modest Christmas hamper from Bettys. It’s only £500. Worth every penny."Christmas hamper"

This velvet chair from Oliver Bonas is nice too. I would obviously need a lovely big white room to put it in, just for me to fill with books and pretty things I’d cut out from magazines.

See how easy I am to please?

This week was my birthday. I’m writing this as a way of saying thank you to everyone for their lovely cards and messages, and to my mum for a lovely lunch, but also to show of some of my favourite birthday presents, to make you all green with envy.

Belle always makes birthdays special my putting together a ‘hamper’ of goodies. I use the term loosely, as what she actually does is wrap a selection of items that she doesn’t want any more from her bedroom. They say it’s the thought that counts, and this year she went one better, and thought to wrap up things from Bee’s bedroom instead. Unfortunately she didn’t tell Bee first, so I have had to sneak quite a lot of it back, but a birthday really wouldn’t be the same without it.

This year she also hand painted me Jimmy the Jamaican Giraffe, who I’m sure you’ll agree is terribly handsome:

Toy Giraffe

Jimmy stands tall and proud

Bee did extremely well this year, and looked very pleased with herself as she presented me with these earrings. “Look!” she cried. “A Owl!” (Emphasis on the ‘A’ in a Phone Shop styley. Watch it if you haven’t seen it.)

owl earrings

“A owl!” “A owl?” “A owl!”

And if that weren’t enough, definitely-can’t-be-described-as-new-anymore Boyfriend bought me books and jam. Books. And Jam.

Books and jam

All I need now is a spoon

It is genuinely without even a hint of sarcasm that I say what more could a girl* want? Picture me if you will, late in the evening, sitting in bed reading, spoon in hand, face smeared with rhubarb and vanilla.

So there you go, a selection of some of my New Best Things. My question for the day is this – what is the best birthday present you’ve ever been given? Was it a small rubber ball found on the floor by one of your children? Or jam perhaps? Let me know…

*OK, OK, woman in her mid-thirties**

I love Christmas.

There. I said it.

I’m not ashamed to be one of the people who gets excited hearing Slade played in shops in November. It makes me happy.

It’s not the actual day so much, which tends to be a bit of an anti-climax, dominated by that slightly over-full-probably-shouldn’t-have-had-bucksfizz-for-breakfast feeling, it’s the build up I love. And the longer the better in my opinion. The smell of a Christmas tree in the morning, choosing presents, eating mince pies and brandy butter for breakfast. It’s all good.

To try and get even the scroogiest of readers into the Christmas spirit, I’m giving you the chance to win £100 to spend on presents in the Tesco Christmas Gift Guide. One hundred whole quid. That’s not too shoddy is it? View Post

Hooray! At last, my childlike excitement over the arrival of the post everyday has finally been rewarded. This week I had my first parcel as part of the Secret Post Club.

The brainchild of Heather at Notes From Lapland, the Secret Post Club appeals to the natural child in all of us – that part of us that feels a spark of eager anticipation at the sound of the postman stuffing the usual pile of bills and catalogues through the letter box. The post rarely contains anything inspiring, but the joy is in the not knowing – one day it just might be that letter that changes your life.

Anyway, the parcel I got this week didn’t quite change my life, but it certainly put a smile on my face for the day. My gift came from Clair at  Kids Craft and Chaos. I must confess I’d not come across Clair’s blog before, but it is definitely worth a read – a lovely mix of crafts, books and general parental musings.

My parcel is beautifully wrapped, and I almost don’t want to open it. I unwrap the first layer and find another parcel, plus some cute hairclips for Belle and Bee.

Bickering is temporarily halted while the new treats are shared out and photographs are posed for. Apologies to Belle for the rather strange angle – I was trying to get a good view of the clips but instead ended up making her look like she has a giant forehead. Oopps.

Very stylish I’m sure you’ll agree! So that’s the kids taken care of, now I get to open a prezzie – very exciting. I want to savour the moment, and I hold it for a while first, imagining what it might be and enjoying having a gift to open. When I do let myself peel off the tape, (I really want to save the cute owl wrapping paper), I’m definitely not disappointed. It is a beautiful notebook, the pages edged in silver. Now anyone who knows me will be smiling at this point, as they will appreciate what a perfect prezzie this is for me. I LOVE notebooks, they are one of my very favourite things. I love buying them, writing in them, putting them in little piles – it is basically any excuse for a new notebook for me.

So I want to say a HUGE thank you to Clair for taking the time and trouble to send me such a lovely gift – it really made my day. Now roll on April…
