A weekend at Berridon Farm with Superdrug

Berridon Farm Devon Superdrug

I have very fond memories of Superdrug in the 1990s. When I was a teenager, with nothing to spend my pocket money on other than hair dye and lip glosses, I would spend a lot of time hanging out in Superdrug. We lived in a small town with not a lot of decent shops, but for some reason we had TWO Superdrugs – one on the High Street and one inside the Angel Place shopping centre.

Trips into town would generally be for a couple of hours after school, and more often than not we’d start in one Superdrug, head to the second to see what different stuff they had, and then end up back at the first one to buy whatever it was that we’d seen in the first place. Belle is a big Superdrug fan now. It’s a Superdrug legacy.

When Superdrug asked if we fancied a weekend of glamping at Berridon Farm in Devon, at the same time as trying out some Superdrug products… Well, what’s not to love about that? A wood burning stove, beautiful views, AND a big stash of make up??

Hell to the yes.

Not quite sure what’s happening to that pig…

Even better, we were loaned a Vauxhall Crossland X for the weekend, so we got to travel without a worrying tapping in the engine and the smell of damp. (Which is always nice.) The Vauxhall Crossland X looks like a bit of a beast of a car, but it was incredibly light and easy to drive. In fact, it was so easy, that it’s hard to think of anything notable to say about it, because you kind of forgot you were driving it?

That’s not to say it was dull or anything like that, just that it felt so NORMAL. Nothing was difficult to figure out, everything was nice and simple and intuitive. It has its fancy elements too though, like OnStar. OnStar includes a high-speed 4G LTE mobile wi-fi hotspot for up to 7 devices, emergency response notification and stolen vehicle recovery technology. Connect the car with the OnStar app and you can view vehicle diagnostics, remotely lock and unlock the car, locate the car, honk the horn and flash the lights as well as download destinations to the in-car navigation system.

Who doesn’t like to be able to honk the horn of a car remotely?? Hours of fun.

Berridon Farm is in an absolutely beautiful spot and the glamping couldn’t have been more lovely. They have five safari style tents, fully equipped with stoves, real beds, tables and chairs – everything you could need for your holiday. In the field around the tents there are rope swings, goats to feed and chickens, who will lay you fresh eggs every morning if you ask very nicely. Although there are two regular bedrooms, one with a double bed and one with bunks, Belle opted for the double bed in a cupboard, which had a hatch onto our bedroom. It made a very cosy den.

When we arrived we found our Superdrug haul waiting for us.

Superdrug had asked us to let them know about the products we used every day, so that they could switch them for Superdrug own versions to see what we thought. We were expecting perhaps some shampoo, shower gel and a bit of toothpaste, so we were blown away to discover a whole bag full of goodies each. Belle’s treats were in a lovely little suitcase. She couldn’t have been happier.

Of course the first thing that Belle did was to look through MY bag and take out all of the things that SHE wanted. She then decided that a really fun activity would be to do my make-up for me with all her new products. I couldn’t think of a legitimate reason why not, so I let her loose. She had everything – primers, contouring sticks, lipsticks – the works. She absolutely loves make-up, and doing other people’s make-up, so this was a proper treat for her.

I think I look rather lovely.

My favourite spot in the tent was the little seating area outside. I took out some pillows from the bed and made myself a little comfy nook. Things I like to do on holiday – read books, drink tea, write things in a lovely notebook, sit down.

It was all of my mini-break dreams come true.

Plus I had to try to local beer didn’t I? It would have been rude not to.

(The GORGEOUS yellow notebook is a Weskin notebook from Bookblock. It’s a cracker of a notebook, and you customise it with your favourite colour cover, two different coloured ribbons, monogramming and printed inserts if you want them. It’s LUSH.)

Up at the farm itself you’ll find a shower and toilet block and a well stocked pantry. It’s not a shop exactly, but they have enough stuff to be able to rustle up a meal should you want to, plus they have local beers, ciders, shortbread and chocolate. You can also preorder home made pies, pastries for breakfast, and BBQ packs. The sweetie corner is also VERY COOL.

On Sunday mornings, you can book in for a big cooked farmhouse breakfast in the barn, which was YUM.

Apart from getting to do my make-up and the whole ‘sleeping in a cupboard’ thing, I would say there were a total of five highlights for Belle, some of which might surprise you.

Roger the dog

Roger was the farm dog, but Belle quite fancied him belonging to our tent. Roger didn’t seem to mind.

The Superdrug toiletries

Obviously.

There was a little note from Superdrug saying ‘please let us know if there is anything you particularly like and would like some more of!’

‘Tell them I like EVERYTHING!’ said Belle.

She especially liked the B. cosmetics range and had lots of fun trying things out on her hands. I’m still not entirely sure what ‘pigments’ are, but she seems to like them. A lot of people (i.e. me) probably don’t know either than the entire B. range is cruelty free and suitable for vegans. She really like others products from the B. range too, like the B. pure micellar water. I have to admit that I wasn’t terribly familiar with the range, but I’ve been having a good look at it since, and I especially like the look of the skincare products that you can tailor according to your age.

Hot chocolates in Bude

We can definitely recommend Life’s A Beach cafe, overlooking Bude beach, and the wetsuit hire shop just next door is really good value. We played a bit of hangman too – classic holiday activity – although I’m still not entirely sure that ‘donkeygalatic’ is a word.

Fake tanning

Belle looked a bit unsure when she unpacked the Superdrug tanning products as she has never self tanned before, but she soon realised that there is actually a LOT of fun to be had with a packet of self-tanning wipes.

Grinding coffee

This was my favourite of her favourites.

The safari tent had one of those old fashioned coffee grinding machines on the wall and a jar of coffee beans, and I swear Belle sat there for about half an hour grinding beans and collecting the coffee into a pot. I don’t know what it was about it she liked so much, but it was adorable. (Sorry Berridon Farm that we used a lot of beans.)

So there you have it. Our weekend away at Berridon Farm with Superdrug. I can 100% recommend Berridon Farm for a holiday and will definitely be shopping in Superdrug, not that I ever wasn’t. It’s just a bit of a shame that where I live now only has ONE Superdrug store. Although knowing Belle and how long she can spend looking at a display of pigments, perhaps it’s not such a bad thing after all.

We were guests at Berridon Farm courtesy of Superdrug. All opinions our own.

Ooh it looks like a proper rustic retreat, that hatch is great!
I also have many fond memories as a teenager in Superdrug, probably annoying them by trying every sample for hours, then spending £2!!

Exactly – that was me too! It seems like it’s pretty much the same now though whenever I go in with Belle :-)
