Today I’ve got a corker of a competition for you. In conjunction with eHarmony.co.uk, I’m giving away the key to a knock out new look. There will be two prizes – the winner will receive £200 of John Lewis vouchers, with £100 of vouchers for the runner up. Both winners will also receive a trial three month subscription to eHarmony, which you are very welcome to pass on to a friend if you’re already happily attached.
I wrote a post a little while ago about the importance of a first kiss, but first impressions are important even before you meet, let alone get any smooching action. We all know that red is the colour of love and romance, but the evidence suggests that men find women dressed in red more attractive, whether that be in a photo on an online dating profile, or in person.
It works in all kinds of scenarios apparently, so make sure you wear a red t-shirt if you’re ever hitchhiking!

On a recent first date to a nice pub with a friend of a friend, I ummed and ahhed for ages, deciding what to wear – but was pleased with my final outfit of a flattering (tummy concealing!) red shift dress, black and white blazer, black jeggings, ankle boots and the all-important detail, a slash of Mac’s Ruby Woo lipstick. Making an effort without it looking like I had. And what did my date wear..? Not one, but TWO hoodies. He was cold, apparently. Jeans with holes in them, and not in the cool way. A manky t-shirt. And all in a palette of murky browns and greys. I’ll leave you to work out if there was a second date..!

It’s been a long time since I went on a first date since I’ve been married for twelve years. Back then it was jeans, band t-shirt and doc martins. Now I would probably go with a casual skirt and top with a decent pair of shoes, shoes are important you know. In fact if I had to invent an inspirational quote, perhaps for my twitter bio, I would go with “always wear good shoes and your life will tread brilliantly.”

I think it would depend on WHERE the date was! I wouldn’t wear a posh frock for a picnic on the beach but then I wouldn’t wear jeans to meet in a restaurant. However, my idea scenario would be smart/casual so that I was comfy enough not to be concerned about my appearance.

My first date with my husband was a cycling trip around Iceland, so I was wearing shorts and sandals, and a waterproof jacket, most of the time! Sexy, huh? ;) For a more normal date situation, it would depend on the venue – I’m usually in jeans and a nice top, but I can scrub up to black-tie standards if there’s something exciting going on.

Keep it simple, comfortable, and suits your personality. I’ve gone with classic lines in blacks and reds, with a fun polka dot skirt and a clash of reds to show my uniqueness off to my potential beau :) Of course if the first date is a mountain hike or rock climbing the outfit then stick to jeans, first dates tend to be for coffee, lunch or a uber posh dinner and this would be fab !

On a first date, I’d always wear something polka dot as it’s my lucky print. Usually a nice top and black jeans does it for me, a skirt in the summer maybe. I’m very happily taken now and on our first date I wore a polka dot peter pan collar t-shirt and jeans and he said I looked stunning and that was enough for me. Nearly two years later, happier than we ever have been.

It depends on the man & where the date is.
But, I would always go for something you feel comfy in.
It’s best to be underdressed than overdressed … as I found out to my embarrassment once.
I hadn’t had a date in a while, so went completely overboard & got ‘dolled up’!
However, the place was jammed with ‘much younger than me people’ dressed in jeans, sweatshirts & converses … including my date!
I felt very uncomfortable all night & didn’t enjoy a second of it!

I’d wear a midi dress, strappy heels, blazer and a clutch.
For a first date I would wear something smart casual, If the weather is like this, probably a nice flowing maxi with some comfy wedges. I wouldn’t over do the make up as if we end up on more dates, he may get put off if am not always glammed up LOL I would def wear my “lucky pants” simply because they give an inner confidence boost, BUT……. he would have to wait to see them for himself as not to be seen on a first date

If I was going for a meal something a bit dressier but not over the top. If going to the pub jeans and a dressy top and don’t forget the heels. But I am 5ft 7″ and my bloke is 5ft 3″ I tower over him heels but I quite like it!!!!!

I’d wear something smart, because after all you only ever get one chance to make a first impression. Something like the gorgeous dress in the photo above would be great, but not in red for a first day because red says ‘I’m hot!’ and that’s not really the message I’d want to send out :-)
