150 years of the London Underground in pictures

That’s a bit of a false claim really. It is the 150th anniversary of the London Underground this year, but I actually took all these pictures this week, Wednesday to be precise, when I was in London for the day.

Yes, I am that person, stopping to take pictures of signs when everyone is bustling around impatiently on their way to something Very Important Indeed. Never mind. Someone has to be.

I’ve always loved the Tube, and have been inspired lately by my friend Sian’s photography blog – London Underground Lover – to stop just going ‘ooh that’s nice’ and actually take some pictures. It would be nice to have a proper camera and not just my phone, lens polished on my sleeve, and to have some basic photography skills, but hey ho, you make do.

Here then are my favourite pictures from my day out, including a few signs and a staircase from Covent Garden station – one of my favourites because it has lifts that make you feel like you’re about to go on the Disneyland Tower of Terror ride. If you get too scared you can always use the original spiral staircase. There are only 193 steps.

"Notting Hill Gate"

"King's Cross"

"to the trains"

"193 steps"

"Piccadilly circus"

"way out"

Are you a fan of the Tube?

I recommend the London Transport Museum – with or without small children in tow, it’s fascinating. (No, really!)

God stupid phone! Avoid IT when I lived in London but it is functional and great when it runs well and isn’t too busy. Or too hot!
