Moving house

Tomorrow I am moving house.

In twelve hours time I will actually be picking up an actual van and having to fill it with all of the things in the house. All of them. Not just a few of them.

And then, to add insult to injury, I have to drive them half a mile around the corner and take them all out again.

Crazy times.

I thought, looking around the house when we first decided to move, that we didn’t have that much stuff. We’ve got rid of lots of furniture, as we’re moving somewhere smaller, and in my mind it was really just a sofa, a couple of beds and a few boxes of books. Oh deary, deary me, how wrong I was. We may not have masses of furniture, no wardrobes or big bookcases to speak of, but my God we have a lot of shite.

There are so many things that you just wouldn’t think of, that seem to blend into the house, so that you don’t notice them until you pile them all up in one room and stand back, aghast.

I’ve done a quick stock take of some of the things you might not normally consider, and we have:

  • 17 house plants
  • 12 outdoor plants in tubs
  • 43 framed pictures, including 4 large canvas prints
  • 3 bikes and 2 scooters
  • 3 printers. Who on earth needs 3 printers? We only have one desktop computer. It is quite ridiculous.

This is just a teeny tiny part of the list.

As we speak, my downstairs is piled floor to ceiling with the detritus that I have collected over the years and I am hiding upstairs in a now empty bedroom, afraid to look.

Wish me luck…

I love moving as it gives you a legitimate reason to toss out so much junk you are attached to for sentimental (or just plain mental) reasons and you can’t bring yourself to throw out. In my case ten tons of baby clothes although my kids are 9 and 11.

Yeah, that’s true, I do love a good clear out, and it’s good to have a reason that isn’t just ‘well your paintings are rubbish darling, you’re only three’, or similar, which seems a bit cruel.

Oh god, we will be moving within a few weeks, having only moved from a 2 bed flat to a 3 bed, 2 reception room house with large garden… Most likely we will be moving into a flat again. I am DREADING it.

    Good luck! Xx

Oh dear, good luck!! We basically moved from a 10 room house to a five room house. Smaller rooms too! Are you moving yourself or getting removal people? After this time I have promised myself I am never ever doing it myself again. I may even start saving now!

For some reason, my comment yesterday didn’t post. It was something along the lines of “I feel your pain”! Remember that I moved about a year and a half ago, also into a smaller place? It was an experience that made my previous move (in which I was was briefly homeless between apartments) seem like a pajama party. And I’m still trying to find places for things. (Heck, I’m still trying to find things!) Good luck with it all!

Oh dear, will I still be trying to find homes for things this time next year?! It was fine in the old house, as we had a spare room that you could just put things in and not have to think about them, but when space is tight, it’s like ‘well, where ACTUALLY can I physically put this right now?’!

Oh dear! You should have just hired a mover to save you the stress of hauling. I just moved house over the weekend and you are right, you never though you have so much stuff until you see a room full of boxes from floor to ceiling. Although if you think about it, we barely even use most of them. Time to let go of stuff!

I wish I had been able to afford to! Removal companies are so expensive though aren’t they?!
